How to Price Handmade Goods for Profit (Not Poverty)
Most artisans undercharge by 40-60%. The result? Burnout, resentment, and a “business” that pays less than minimum wage. Here’s the formula that fixes it.
The pricing formula every maker needs
Price = (Materials + Labour + Overhead) × 2
That “× 2” is not greed — it’s the wholesale multiplier. It covers your profit margin, reinvestment in tools and education, and the 20-30% that disappears to taxes, platform fees, and returns. Without it, you’re subsidising your buyers with your time.
Step 1: Calculate your material cost (honestly)
Include everything: the clay, the glaze, the kiln gas, the sandpaper, the packaging, the tissue paper, the stickers. Most makers forget consumables and shipping materials, which can add 5-15% to your true cost.
Step 2: Calculate your labour cost (and pay yourself)
Decide on an hourly rate. Not “whatever’s left over” — a real number. In the UK, a skilled artisan should charge £20-40/hour minimum. If a mug takes you 2 hours including finishing and photography, that’s £40-80 in labour alone.
Step 3: Calculate your overhead
Studio rent, electricity, insurance, internet, software subscriptions, market stall fees, website hosting. Divide your monthly overhead by the number of products you make per month. This is your per-unit overhead.
Step 4: Apply the multiplier
For direct-to-consumer sales: × 2.0 to 2.5.
For wholesale (you want to sell to shops): × 2.5 to 3.0 so the shop can mark up and you still profit.
Example: Handmade Ceramic Mug
Yes, £120 for a handmade mug is reasonable. You’re not competing with IKEA. You’re selling craft.
“But nobody will pay that!”
If your current audience won’t pay fair prices, you have the wrong audience, not the wrong prices. Etsy trains buyers to expect mass-market pricing from handmade sellers. Your own storefront, with proper brand positioning, attracts buyers who value craft.
